If you’ve recently upgraded to Windows 10 or 11 and now your keyboard isn’t working<\/strong>, you’re not alone. Many other Windows 10\/11 users are reporting the same problem, especially after installing the KB4074588 update on February 13, 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And fortunately, there’s a solution. Here are 5 options to try. You may not need to try them all. Just work your way down the list until you find the one that fixes the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Ensure your USB port is working<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Turn off filter keys<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Reinstall your keyboard driver<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Update your keyboard and USB drivers (recommended)<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Update your computer BIOS<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Switch to ChromeOS<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Before we move further…<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Here’s a quick way to tell if your keyboard not working is a hardware problem or not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Open Notepad, the built-in Windows app, and try to type in it. If the faulty keys don’t work even in Notepad, the problem is very likely on the hardware front. In that case, you may get your keyboard repaired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Otherwise, please move on to the fixes below to get the keyboard not working problem fixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Method 1: Ensure your USB port is working<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Sometimes a USB port can just stop working when you upgrade to a new version of Windows. Usually, it’s because of a driver problem. You should always check for this problem first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Fortunately, it’s easy to test: simply unplug the keyboard from the USB port and plug in another USB device – like a mouse or an external hard drive. If that device doesn’t work either, the USB port itself is the problem, and you should skip straight to Method 4<\/a>. If the device you just plugged in does work, then continue to Method 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    <\/a>Method 2: Turn off filter keys<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Windows has a setting, called Filter Keys, that allows you to control how it deals with accidental repeated keystrokes. Unfortunately, if turned on, this setting has been known to cause some keyboards to stop working in Windows 10\/11. So you should check if it’s turned on. If it is, you should turn it off and see if that resolves the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For Windows 10:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    1. On your PC desktop, click the Action Center<\/strong> icon in the lower-right corner and click All settings<\/strong>. 
      \"\"<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Click Ease of Access<\/strong>.
      \"\"<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Click Keyboard<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span>
      \"\"<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Ensure Filter Keys<\/strong> is OFF<\/strong>, and close the window.
      \"\"<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      For Windows 11:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      1. On your keyboard, press the Windows<\/strong> key<\/strong> + I<\/strong> at the same time to open Settings<\/strong>. Then click Accessibility<\/strong>.

      2. Scroll down the page and select Keyboard<\/strong>.
        \"\"<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. Make sure Filter Keys<\/strong> is set to Off<\/strong>. Then close the window.<\/span><\/span>

          <\/a>Method 3: Reinstall your keyboard driver<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          If your keyboard driver has developed a fault, your keyboard may stop working. To fix it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \n
          1. Right-click the Start <\/strong>button, then click Device Manager<\/strong>.
            \"\"\/<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          2. Expand Keyboards<\/strong> then right-click Standard PS\/2 Keyboard<\/strong> and click Uninstall<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span>
            \"\"\/<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          3. When prompted to confirm, click OK<\/strong>.
            \"\"\/<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          4. Restart your computer after the uninstall. If the problem persists, it’s likely that your driver is outdated, rather than faulty, and you should try Method 4<\/a> below.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            <\/a>Method 4: Update your keyboard and USB driver (recommended)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            One of the most common causes of an unresponsive keyboard is an outdated keyboard or USB driver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            There are two ways you can get the right drivers for your keyboard and USB port: manually or automatically. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Manual driver update<\/strong> – You can update your drivers manually by going to the manufacturer’s website and searching for the most recent correct driver.               Method 5: Update your computer BIOS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

              Updating software usually helps the system stability and optimization, so at this point, if your keyboard still refuses to work, please also make sure that your computer BIOS is updated to the latest version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
